| Rapidly improving infrastructure and ICT have been inducing more and more Internet users in the sub-continent; many users are now getting easier access to the Internet than before.
Over 1 billion people, 1/6th of world's population reside in India. There are 22 Official languages in India with a rich cultural diversity. In a democratic nation that’s currently witnessing rapid penetration of Internet, there is a huge potential for sources of free knowledge. The presentation aims at highlighting the significance of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects in the sub-continent; the present scenario of the projects; the rapid growth of Internet; the digital divide that exists in this transition time; the projects in different Indian languages - barriers in language computing that affect these projects; and how communities are responding to these. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
